Long-time regulator retires from credit union agency; acting regional director named

A 37-year veteran of the federal credit union regulator is retiring from the agency, it said Friday, naming an acting regional director for the position she most recently held.

The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) said Cherie Freed, who joined the agency in 1987, will retire effective Saturday, Aug. 24. Freed is now the director for the agency’s western region.

NCUA said John Kutchey, regional director for its eastern region, will oversee the western division until a new regional director is selected. As for the eastern department, NCUA said, Associate Regional Director Mike Ryan will serve as its acting regional director during this transition.

Before she was named a regional director in 2016, Freed served as the associate regional director for the western region. She previously served as the director of supervision and as the loss-risk analysis officer in the NCUA’s Office of Examination and Insurance.

The agency said that, throughout her career, Freed received numerous awards and recognition, including Specialized Examiner of the Year, Supervisor of the Year, and the NCUA Chairman’s Outstanding Achievement Award for Career Achievement.
