Research papers on AI – including impact on financial stability, use for fraud – sought for symposium

Academic research papers on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in banking and finance, including on topics such as the effect on financial stability and use for fraud, are being sought by the regulator of national banks for an economic symposium it plans in June, the agency said Monday.

The papers will be due by Dec. 15, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) said. Authors of selected papers will be notified by April 1, 2025, and will have the option of presenting their papers virtually, the OCC said.

Authors of those selected papers may present their efforts to OCC staff and invited academic and government researchers at agency headquarters in Washington, D.C., on June 6, according to the OCC.

“Submitted papers must represent original and unpublished research,” the agency said. “Those interested in acting as a discussant may express their interest in doing so in their submission email.”

The agency paper topics of interest include:

  • Addressing the potential risks that AI poses to financial stability.
  • Addressing potential bias and the disparate impacts from the use of AI and machine learning (ML) in lending.
  • The risks of AI/ML in perpetrating fraud, algorithmic bias, and misinformation.
  • Use of AI/ML for fraud detection, prevention, and operational enhancement processes.
