An appointment for the director of an office handling agency employee complaints of harassment and other “interpersonal misconduct” was announced Wednesday by the federal insurer of bank deposits.
Hansel J. Cordeiro, an attorney, was named director of the new Office of Professional Conduct (OPC) for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC), the agency said. The office was created in June following the public revelation of alleged sexual harassment of agency employees in recent years – and the agency’s inaction in dealing with the charges.
Cordeiro was most recently executive director of accountability and strategic business management at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), according to the FDIC.
The agency said Cordeiro “will lead the OPC’s work to receive, investigate and report on complaints of interpersonal misconduct within the FDIC workplace.” The office will also, the FDIC said, “determine and discipline anyone violating the FDIC’s anti-harassment or anti-retaliation policies.”
Cordeiro will report on the work of the OPC directly to the FDIC Board, the agency said.
At the FAA, the FDIC said, Cordeiro led the FAA’s anti-harassment program, which it said was the largest program within the U.S. Department of Transportation. He also established the agency’s anti-harassment policies and “oversaw the receipt and investigation of allegations of harassment, sexual misconduct, and retaliation involving FAA employees and contractors, as well as management actions on substantiated allegations,” it said. He also oversaw anti-harassment training for the agency.
He was chosen for FDIC role, the agency said, “from among several highly qualified candidates after a competitive nationwide public solicitation.”
Cordeiro holds a J.D. from the Washburn University School of Law and a B.A. degree from Hunter College of the City University of New York.
