Employee complaints of discrimination and retaliation at the federal insurer of bank deposits will be overseen by the new leader of the agency’s equal employment opportunity office, the agency said Thursday.
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) said Amanda J. Lavis will be director of the agency’s new Office of Equal Employment Opportunity (OEEO), which was created in June. The FDIC said the office was formed to serve as “a single point of entry for employee complaints of discrimination and retaliation.”
“In this role, Ms. Lavis will lead the OEEO’s work to intake, investigate, and report on complaints of employment discrimination within the FDIC workplace,” the agency said in a release.
The new OEEO, along with another new unit at the agency (the Office of Professional Conduct (OPC)), reports to the FDIC Board directly. Both offices were established in the wake of a sexual harassment scandal that swept through the agency last spring. The scandal ultimately led to the resignation of FDIC Board Chairman Martin Gruenberg. He remains on the board, however, until the Senate confirms his successor.
In June, Christy Goldsmith Romero was named by President Joe Biden (D) to be a member and chairman of the FDIC Board. However, the Senate has yet to act on her nomination.
Lavis most recently served as chief culture officer for the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM). She was the primary EEO advisor to the commanding general and executive leadership.
The FDIC said she previously served as the State of Hawaii’s EEO Officer, serving as the primary EEO advisor to the governor and executive branch.
She also worked with financial institutions and other private and public sector clients on employment issues and all aspects of EEO compliance as an attorney and partner at Rhoads & Sinon LLP, the agency said.
Lavis has a J.D. from the Villanova University School of Law, an MBA from Shippensburg University, and a B.S. in International Business from Messiah University.
